Sub Pădure/Unterwald
Sub Pădure/Unterwald, one of the oldest historical regions in Transylvania, was for a long time the western border of the country. It received its name for being located below the forested Carpathian Mountains. Sub Pădure/Unterwald means "the land below the forest" in English. The western part of the region was the first area settled by the Saxons, with Romos/Rumes and Orăştie/Broos being considered to be the first German settlements.
The region offers many places that are well worth seeing, including the Count's Castle in Câlnic/Kelling (a UNESCO World Heritage site), and the two fortified churches in Orăştie/Broos and Miercurea Sibiului/Reußmarkt.
