Getting to Transylvania
Romania being a member of the EU since 2007, EU citizens require a national ID card or a passport (valid six months into the future) and no visa.
By car
Travellers from Germany can enter Romania via Austria (or the Czech Republic/Slovakia) and Hungary. The route consists of motorways (Germany to Hungary) and European roads (in Romania). Transylvania can be accessed via the European roads E68 (Arad-Deva-Sibiu) and E81 (Cluj Napoca-Alba Julia-Sibiu).
By air
Transylvania has three international airports: Sibiu/Hermannstadt, Târgu Mureş/Neumarkt, and Cluj-Napoca/Klausenburg. Direct flights from Berlin, Frankfurt am Main, Munich, Vienna, and Düsseldorf are available throughout the year from major airlines: Lufthansa(www.lufthansa.com), Austrian Airlines (www.aua.com) and Tarom (www.tarom.ro). The airlines Wizzair (www.wizzair.com), Malev (www.malev.hu) and Carpatair (www.carpatair.com) also offer flights with transfer connections from many other German cities.
Travellers who wish to enter Transylvania by air can find the best connections and compare airline offers using the search engines www.skyscanner.net and www.opodo.de.
By train
Getting to Transylvania by train is a comfortable alternative. There are direct daily international high-speed trains between Germany and Romania. Travelling by train in Romania itself is very inexpensive.
